Mike Weir Jumps To No. 30
Mike Weir has finally reached his highest position on the world golf ranking list in more than two years. He rose 18 positions to No. 30 after his victory at the Fry’s Electronics Open on Sunday. He finished one stroke ahead of Mark Hensby on Sunday for his first PGA Tour victory since the 2004 Nissan Open.
Weir was last ranked 30th on Sept. 11, 2005. The 2003 Masters champion earned US$900,000 for the victory to jump from 84th to 33rd on the money list at $1,986,053. The win was the eighth of Weir’s PGA Tour career, which tied him with the late George Knudson for the most by a Canadian.
Calgary’s Stephen Ames was the only other Canadian in the top 50 this week. He fell four positions to No. 49. Tiger Woods remained in top spot. Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els and Steve Stricker rounded out the top five.
